This is an image of a 2x2 chart titled "Started Well, Going Well" that compares the current state of four different types of online content: Google search results, Wikipedia, comment sections, and podcasts. The chart's axes are labeled "STARTED WELL" and "GOING WELL".Top-left quadrant ("Started Well, Not Going Well"): This quadrant ("ENSHITTIFICATION") represents Google results, comparing how they were in the past to how they are now. "Then": Google results simply contained the "Thing you want." "Now": Google results include "Sponsored results," "AI-generated summary," "People also ask...," "View products," and eventually the "Thing you want" at the bottom. Top-right quadrant ("Started Well, Going Well"): This quadrant ("SHINE") represents Wikipedia, showing how it has improved or maintained its quality. "Then": Wikipedia provided "Articles" and "Citations." "Now": Wikipedia still has "Articles" and "Citations" along with "Rapid updates." Bottom-left quadrant ("Didn't Start Well, Not Going Well"): This quadrant ("SHIT") represents the comments section, indicating that it has always been problematic. "Then": Comments were filled with "Trolls" and "Nazi." "Now": Comments still contain "Trolls" and "Nazi" as well as "Bots." Bottom-right quadrant ("Didn't Start Well, Going Well"): This quadrant ("SHITSHINIFICATION") represents podcasts, highlighting their growth and quality improvement. "Then": Podcasts were characterized by "Amateur audio" and "Limited topics." "Now": Podcasts have "Pro production" and "Diverse content." The image is signed with "TUESDAY2x2.COM" in the bottom right corner.
I wanted to improve my earlier STARTED/GOING 2×2, so in the upper left quadrant I adapted Chaz Hutton’s actually-good comic and then did something similar in the other three quadrants. But in the end I may have accidentally just enshittified the whole thing. 😆
